How Long Grip Training:
Since February 2009 (had messed around for a couple
months with a buddy’s HG’s at work a couple years ago).
Current Grip Training Program: 3-4
days per week devoted to grip (sometimes more). I find that high frequency
training works best for me. Do mostly max and near max closes. I also try to
do BFNs on bigger grippers and overcrushes too. However, it usually takes 2 -3
days to recover from the overcrushes. Those really seem to tax the forearm.
Every once in a while I will throw a volume workout in. I just try to see how
many singles or reps I can get on my #3. That sort of thing. I also do pinch,
one arm deadlifts, levering and bending. I also just purchased a 1” vbar from
FBBC so that training starts as soon as I get it.
Other
Training Information: : I work out 2 -3 times
per week. Right now I am in the middle of a bench program that Richard Sorin
designed for me. Usually the emphasis is on full body compound movements: Deads,
squats, rows, bench, overhead press, etc. Who would have thought I
would find a whole new sport at 41?
Acknowledgements:
Way too many and
forgive me if I forget anybody. So many people have helped me out. It is
amazing what a great group of guys we have in this sport. Hammy (for introducing
me to the sport and encouraging me), Goody & John Eaton for showing me how to
actually set a gripper and giving me advice all along the journey, Sam Solomi,
Ben Edwards, Aaron Corcorran, Frank Snyder, Teemu I, Todd Coenen, Richard Sorin,
Hugo & Booyah & others on the bending which has helped my wrist strength a ton,
Paul Knight for the great video on setting, Steve Gardner who helped me figure
out the video thing, and most importantly my videographer and beautiful wife
Melissa for putting up with all this foolishness.
